Does uni prepare you for working life?

Once your studies are over and it's time to work for a living, will you feel prepared, or will it come as a massive shock? We catch up with students and recent graduates to find out.

Mili

Mili, 21 I'm studying marketing at university and I feel my degree is giving me a broader understanding of how the marketing sector works. When I graduate it will be useful to relate the theories that I'm currently studying to real businesses.

Nick

Nick, 21 University is definitely an experience that helps you grow as a person. I think that it gives you a solid base to build the rest of your life on.

Bukky

Bukky, 19 I would say that university could do a lot better at preparing you for working life. A lot of courses are only three years long and involve lots of reading and writing essays. I think they should all include a fourth year where you can go on an internship to get more experience on your course.

Alex

Alex, 23 Does university prepare you for working life? No, not at all. I've worked on and off since the age of 16 and feel that has been more useful than anything I've learnt at university. University does help you at getting things in on deadline, but you will learn that at school. On the positive side, it teaches you about how to work on your own and what you can do by yourself. I'd definitely recommend you get some work experience before you get a job.

Ketura

Ketura, 19 I don't really think university does prepare you much for working life. But you do get experience of being around different people, whereas at school you're always around your own age group. At uni you get to mix with mature and younger students and you meet people from all different walks of life.

James

James, 22 Being at university gets you used to doing group work, working to deadlines, and being more responsible for yourself.

Irene

Irene, 21 I think university has given me a valuable experience so I'll be ready for the world of work. We've done lots of group work, so that's enabled me to gain more confidence and learn how to solve problems. I think overall I'll be more prepared than if I hadn't gone to university. Hopefully it will all help me when I eventually get a job.
