Free mental health care?
Question
Is there a mental hospital in the UK I can admit myself to where it won't cost me anything? I feel like I'm falling apart and hanging on by a thread.
Answer
It sounds like you are going through a difficult time at the moment and this must feel very isolating and distressing, but in terms of accessing hospital treatment, there are a number of options. You could arrange to see your local doctor (GP), who will be able to discuss the symptoms and feelings you've been experiencing. You may then be referred to any specialist support or appropriate treatment services. Alternatively, you could try contacting your local community mental health team direct, through social services. Contact details should be available in your local phone book or council website.
If you would like to speak to someone about your situation and how you've been feeling, SANELINE is a national mental health helpline (0845 767 8000) offering confidential emotional support and information to anyone experiencing mental health problems.
For more immediate action, you may like to go to your local hospital accident and emergency department, where an on-duty psychiatrist may be available to assess your situation and, like your GP, refer you on to any appropriate services that may be of further help.
